History

Veeco traces its history back to 1945, when it was founded in New York by helium leak detector inventors.  The company's original name, "Veeco" stood for Vacuum Electronics Engineering Company.

In 1990, Ed Braun, Chief Operating Officer of the original Veeco, led a management buy-out of certain company assets and retained Veeco’s name to start a new Veeco.  The Company refocused its overall strategy to become a leading semiconductor & data storage equipment provider.

In July 2007, Ed Braun retired as CEO, bringing in John Peeler as the Company's new leader. John embarked on a strategy to transform the company on several key vectors - accelerated product development, flexible operations strategy and a focus on technologies tied to growth markets.

In 2010, Veeco opened a new supply chain hub in Singapore as part of the Company's outsourced manufacturing efforts.  Veeco's flexible manufacturing strategy enabled us to quintuple MOCVD capacity when the LED market expanded into TV backlighting.  Later in the year, Veeco sold its Metrology business to focus solely on Process Equipment technology.

In 2011, Veeco achieved multiple milestones across several of its business units.  Veeco achieved #1 market share in MOCVD and record revenues in its Data Storage business.  The company achieved nearly $1 billion in revenue and launched a new Veeco Certified Equipment business designed to satisfy demand for fully refurbished and tested pre-owned ion beam etch and deposition systems.

In 2011, Veeco began to place a strong focus on MEMS and Magnetic Sensors for data storage technologies.  As the world’s leader in Ion Beam Etch (IBE) and magnetic Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) technology, Veeco leveraged its experience and superior process knowledge to meet the critical challenges of next generation MEMS and sensor devices.

In May 2012, Veeco expanded its industry leading TurboDisc® MOCVD platform with three new tools: MaxBright® MHP™, MaxBright M™ and K465i HP™.  These new systems help bring LED customers even better cost of ownership than prior generation systems.
